Empowering the next generation of technology leaders in the U.S. Foreign Service

Designed for talented, diverse students pursuing undergrad or graduate IT-related degrees, you get academic funding for your junior and senior years, or your two-year master’s degree program. Plus, you get two valuable internship experiences (one abroad) and personalized mentoring. Upon successful completion and passing the State Department’s requirements, you’ll get an appointment in the Foreign Service as an Information Management Specialist for five years minimum.

 

Benefits

As a FAIT Fellow, you will receive:

  • Academic funding (up to $37,500 annually for tuition, room and board, books, mandatory fees and some travel expense, for the junior and senior years of undergraduate study, OR a two-year master’s degree program in an IT-related field.

  • Stipends, housing and travel allowances for the two summer internships (one in D.C., one abroad).

  • Personalized mentoring and professional development opportunities throughout the program.

  • An appointment in the Foreign Service as an Information Management Specialist for at least five years upon successful completion of the program and the State Department’s requirements.

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration for the 2020 cohort, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen enrolled in an undergraduate program relevant to IT.
    • Entering the junior year in the fall 2020 or
    • Entering an IT-related master’s degree program beginning in the fall of 2020
  • Hold a minimum 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale at the time of the application, and maintain this GPA through participation in the program.
  • Be able to pass medical and security clearances and suitability requirements.
  • Be prepared to enter the Foreign Service (a five-year commitment) in fall of 2022.

Timeline

The program follows this general schedule:

  • Application Opens: Early November 2019
  • Application Closes: February, 14 2020 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
  • In-person Interviews: Spring 2020
  • Orientation: June 2020
  • Program begins: Fall 2020
  • First Internship (in Washington, D.C.): Summer 2021 (between junior-senior years for undergraduates; between first-second years for graduate students)
  • Second Internship (at an Embassy or Consulate abroad): Summer 2022 (after graduation/completion of degree).
  • Information Management Specialist Position begins: Fall 2022 (following completion of international internship; approximately three months post-graduation)
